Lunch at the Haystack

The worst of the weather has broken. The mule deer drift back and forth from the river to the meadows, my regular companions. When he rises, I see the one-horned buck has narrowly missed disaster, blood dripping from a gash on his hock. He hobbles off into cover. He is a little behind the rest.
